Minutes of the Curlew School Community Association

January 17, 2006

Chairperson Heather Gibson called the meeting to order.  Others present were Jaigne Beck, Ann Seiter and Brett Simpson.

 Treasurer’s Report

  • The non-science fair checking account has $4,131.54 of which $1,461.70 is from apple sales.  The science fair account has $194.86.  Savings account has $392.09.
  • There is a problem with an NSF check from the book fair, and $113.33 is owed to CSCA.  Jaigne will write to her suggesting installments.
  • Some checks from apple sales are still trickling in, and there are still some outstanding IOU’s.  Future suggestions were to eliminate credit, using a receipt book, and depositing funds weekly.
  • Heather has been straightening out the old accounts at the credit union.
  • It was agreed that the science fair account should be combined into the checking account, and Jaigne will keep track.

Principal / School Board Report

  • Mr. Simpson reported that the December meeting was generally devoted to basic business.  The School Board is looking at the development of an attendance policy limiting total absences, as some students have excessive numbers of absences.  The school accepts parental notes as excused absences, regardless of the reason, but a total limit may need to be established in order for the student to obtain credit.  The policy would likely have a waiver provision where the absences are due to serious illness or injury.
  • MAPS testing is currently being conducted to assess student progress during the year.
  • Heather will ask Gretchen Halbach about being the school board liaison.

Old Business

  • The book fair was a big success, and Cec Hamilton’s efforts were acknowledged.  All teachers received the books they requested, as unmet requests were picked up by the school board.  There has been no decision whether to have a spring book fair in May.

 Science Fair Report

  • The fair is scheduled for March 29th.  More time will be made available for classes to visit the fair during school hours.  Mentoring will occur in early February.  Carolyn Jordan has offered to help with mentoring.  Creative Learning in Colville has offered to come into classroom to demonstrate science kits.
  • Display boards will once again be prepaid during registration.
  • Heather will contact someone about arranging judges.  There will be presentations and constructive feedback, but less emphasis on prizes.  Class projects will be encouraged with a prize of a science kit for the winning classroom.  More discussion to occur at next CSCA meeting.
  • Ann Seiter reviewed the list of potential sponsors and presenters.
  • Heather to present potential themes to middle school students for input.
  • Heather will contact the 6th grade about organizing the dinner as a science camp benefit.

Other Business

  • Mrs. Swofford requested funds for special brushes for the mural project.  A motion was made and approved for up to $100 for brushes.
  • Mr. McCullough has suggested that parenting classes be organized.  There was general discussion about ideas and coordination with the grant for encouraging students to move on to college.
