Volunteers are the bridge between
school and community
An important part of Curlew School’s mission is to recruit
and place parent and community volunteers in our school. We know that members of
our community have many unique life experiences, skills, and talents to share
with our students to enhance their education.
Listed below are the areas where our volunteers most
commonly work. If one or more of these areas interests you, please fill out and
return the Curlew School
Volunteer Questionnaire. or call
Laurel Scott, our volunteer coordinator, to discuss how to begin volunteering at
Curlew School. She is also interested in discussing any additional ideas you
might have regarding how to assist the educational goals of Curlew School.
Volunteer Opportunities at
Curlew School:
General
Classroom Assistant
Classroom volunteers
work in partnership with a classroom teacher and provide help as needed. Typical
duties include helping individual students or small groups with reading, math,
or other work that is challenging to them, reading with students, correcting
papers, assisting with class projects, and providing other assistance to the
teacher as requested.
Clerical Assistant
Clerical assistants offer help to teachers and staff
with clerical chores like copying, filing, and/or mailroom assistance.
Library Assistant
Library assistants work with the school librarian
reshelving books and helping students find and check out library materials and
use the various library resources.
Elementary Recess Assistant
Recess assistants join our school staff to monitor
after-lunch recess time, organize group activities, or play jump-rope, 4-square
or other games with our elementary students.
Tutoring/Mentor Program
Tutors work alongside a staff person after school
assisting students who are behind in their work or who need a little extra
instruction. Mentors provide extra guidance to a student who feels s/he could
benefit from more direct involvement with a caring adult. Because of the more
personal nature of the student/mentor relationship, specific prior approval by
the administration and the student’s parent or guardian is required.
Extra-curricular Volunteer
If you are interested in volunteering your time on an
occasional basis, add your name to our list of individuals who can provide
assistance during special classroom or school events like field trips, school
science fair, bookfairs, classroom celebrations, etc.
Speakers’ Bureau
If you have something unique to present to a class,
please call our volunteer coordinator to arrange a speaking engagement. Our
students need to know what it takes to succeed in the world beyond high school.
Whether you work as a doctor, mechanic, engineer, road-grader, accountant, saw
filer, or lawyer, sharing information about your job with our students can help
them make the connection between school and work. Learning about a unique
cultural, travel or other interesting life experience can help them better
understand the world they will encounter outside of Curlew. Likewise,
demonstrating a special skill with our students can enhance and enrich their
educational experience.
