As I begin my third year as the superintendent in the Curlew School District I am extremely impressed with the atmosphere of this district. It is obvious that this district is the center of the community, a place where professional and dedicated staff are committed to serving the children and set high standards for education. It also looks like a place where folks really like to come to work and have some fun.
We are going to face some challenges in the coming months. Our enrollment is steady but is not growing. Our economy is facing some major challenges but our fiscal position is strong and our ability to maintain a high level of service is not, if we are careful, in jeopardy.
We are going to have to explore how we might be able to do business differently. One of those explorations is that for the 2017-2018 school year I will serve as the superintendent of both the Curlew and Republic School Districts. There is no intention, on the part of either school board, to combine districts. Each district will maintain its independent identity. Academic and sports programs will continue to operate as they have in the past years.
If the shared superintendency is successful we will explore how to create some economies of scale with regard to combining some other district operations. As we explore those options there will be opportunity for community input.
In the meantime please feel free to come by and see me or to give me a call. I can be reached at the school district at 509-779-4931 or at home 775-0965. You may also send me an e-mail at email@example.com.
